Dennis Morris

Born in Jamaica and brought up in Dalston, Dennis Morris became immersed in photography at a very early age as a choirboy at St Mark’s Church in Dalston, when he stumbled into the church photography club’s darkroom and saw someone developing a print before his eyes. Mr. Donald Paterson, who ran the club, seeing the boy’s enthusiasm, encouraged him to take up photography.

Dennis Morris is now one of the world’s best-known photographers.

Growing Up Black is the archive of images captured by the young photographer growing up in Hackney in the 1970s.
