Rotozaza present a collection of "micro events" created around the music of six of London's finest experimental musicians - FRIDGE, ICARUS, Adem Ilhan, Theboylucas, Murmer, Sam Britton and Ted Milton. The musicians were asked to create or select a piece to be interpreted into - something that happens - during the listening of it. This is to take place in the monumental neo-gothic church space that is 291 Gallery. Just like that Catalan expression, - a man eating alone in a restaurant is never only eating -, neither is the listener only listening - particularly an avid listener! However abstract, the tendency is to create a kind of "event" surrounding the music as an attempt to channel and intensify the listening experience. When writing music for silent film, the gap where the musicians work is very clear. Ant Hampton suggests that - in music there's often an imaginative space as obvious as the silence in those films. You can hear things while you see things. You can see things while you hear things. I see things in that space.- And what a space! Rotozaza continue their on-going passion with unusual events in unusual spaces, now in a neo-Gothic Victorian Church with dramatic 50 ft high ceilings and extraordinary acoustics: 291 Gallery. Rotozaza [FOR MUSIC] is certainly a celebration of some great talent coming from the contemporary London music scene. But ultimately it's about exploring the way music is listened to in a live context, and how a visual element can - make you listen better -.
