Opera Venus: Gesualdo - Dangerous Love

Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th August

Don Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa wrote a series of erotic, sumptuous and visionary madrigals in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Opera Venus presents an evening of Gesualdo’s work - sensual and dissonant sounds of heaven and hell, expressing the extremes of pleasure and pain that Gesualdo experienced in his personal life. The beautiful unaccompanied voices sing of passion, deception, murder, flagelation and sadomasochism.

The second half of the evening reflects the dark and disturbing Gesualdo narrative with a presentation of six animated films ranging from ‘Dante’s Inferno’ to the erotically charged ‘Asparagus’
