291 Gallery presents Trans_narratives: a multi-media event by Jamika Ajalon.

Trans narratives Is a collaborative multi-disciplinary project which deals with issues around urban landscape and cultural identity.

Fragmented digital self-portraits are blended with live urban action and live improvised music, producing an interesting perspective on the contours and lived experiences within the cityscape. The event blends spoken word, music performed to with digitally manipulated video mixed live; moving through multi-layered subliminal narratives around subjectivity and urban landscapes. Invited guests include: Poet Baden Prince Jnr. DJ Rita Ray, (The Shrine), Resonance FM, and Kevin Davy, (Kevin Davy trio). The evening will culminate in a lam session, in which musicians, spoken word artists and vocalists are invited to come along and do their thing.

About Trans_narrative(s): Acting as a Meta reflexive anthropologist, jamika juxtaposes fragmented digital self-portraits with live urban action, and live improvised music, producing an interesting perspective on the contours and lived experiences within the cityscape.

JAMIKA AJALON’s short films and audio/video installations have been screened in festivals, commissioned for television and exhibited across Europe and the US.

Some works include: multimedia performance/installation, Cultural Skit-zo-frenia, (performed/exhibited :ICA, Roundhouse, Nitro beat Festival, London UK), Memory Tracks(screenings include:Black women’s Film Festival, ICA London) and work in progress, Trans_narrative(s), exhibited as part of Air_port Takeoff 03, Stadtpark FORUM, Graz Austria. She has also performed internationally at venues, and with various groups in sounds systems including the Tony Allen Band, and The Shrine. She frequently tours France with dub group Zenzile and lyricizes her poems on albums Zenzile Meets Jamika 5+1, Sound Patrol, Totem, Zenzile & Jamika meet Cello, and various other compilations. Her poems have been published in numerous collections including Bittersweet: Contemporary Black Women's Poetry, and modern love. An original short story, Guitar, features in the new Serpent’s Tail anthology Kin: New Fiction by Black and Asian Women. She is currently compiling a collection of poems working on a novel, developing Trans_narrative(s): London, and is looking to release a solo album spring 2005. Born in St. Louis Missouri, she now resides in London, UK via Chicago and New York.
