The London Biennale Live
14th, 15th, 16th August 2002
THREE CONSECUTIVE EVENINGS OF PERFORMANCE, FILM AND VIDEO AND INSTALLATION
291 Gallery presents three nights of performance, part of the London Biennale 2002. David Medalla describes the London Biennale as a do-it-yourself, participatory event open to any artist anywhere in the world. 291 Gallery supported the highly successful London Biennale 2000 and we are pleased to host the 2002 event. The London Biennale Live is a platform for new and experimental work by a multitude of international artists.
The London Biennale Live is a platform for new and experimental work. Durational and staged performances will be interspersed with programmes of artists film and video projected in the Main Gallery and the Bar, accompanied by a 3-day exhibition of installations all over the Neo-Gothic building - including the garden, the car park and the toilets!
This year’s event will include Sobreiro by Portuguese installation artist Tiago Slewinski - a full-sized Portuguese cork oak reconstructed and suspended upside down in 291's enormous Main Gallery, Grace Guardina's Ladies Toilet shares gossip and secrets with the participants and Denmark's Ministry of Ideas present ideaboxing inviting 40 artists to participate in an auction of ideas. The experimental music programme includes improvisation and live, specially composed music by Canadian drummer Joe Sorbara, with laptop electoacoustic improvisations by sonic artist Simon Vincent and trumpet and live electronics by Tom Arthurs. Plus a rare performance of live music, spoken word and visuals from members of the legendary CRASS.
Participating artists include: Sale Abdu, Bill Allen, Tony Allen and Ofar, Tom Arthurs, Gulsen Bal, Yason Banal, Steven Barrett, Monica Battagua, Manuela Benini, Judith Bibby, George Bolster, Shannon Campanero, Pedro Cabral Santo, Antoine Catala, Marian Carroll, Marisol Cavia, Francesca Cho, Hester Clark, Rachel Cornish, members of CRASS (Gee Vaucher in performance with Penny Rimbaud, Eve Libertine and Steve Ignorant), Liana Dognini, Elissa Dorfman, Sarah Doyle, Alida Elliot, Sumer Erek, Karen Frazer, Timothy Flitcroft, Rosa Freitas, Geraldine Gallavardin, Alisa Gallo Ross, Grace Giardina, Denis Glaser + Richard Annely, Catriona Guyler, Glenys Hodgeman, Ideaboxing (Iben Dalgard, Stenka Heelach, Marie Louise Helveg, Johanna Lassenius, Helle Sondergaard), Maya Kalogera, Sinead Larkin, Cyril Lepetit, Andrew Liles, Liliana Lopez, Helen Mansfield, Dee Meaden, David Medalla, Birgit Medele
