Being in Motion: 23-04-2005

Being in Motion is an interactive fusion of performance, video art and music/sound. This unique evening of innovative performance presents films by Chris Cunningham, Terry Gilliam and Coldcut. Fusing the experiences of art, theatre, and club under one roof, Being in Motion invites the best of practice from video and performance artists, animators, experimental musicians, Vjs and Djs.

The event has been born from a wish to offer creative stimuli in an unpretentious and entertaining environment. The evening starts with video, animation and performance, and peaks with a late-night synthesis of split-second collaboration between live-mixed image and music, VJ and DJ responding to each other in a style which begs the question what came first the audio or the visual? Video footage combines non-narrative, sound tracked video, animation and music video. The VJ's range from stop frame animation to cinema loops. There will be performances of mime, poetry, puppetry and dance with projected back-drops. Projected images include abstract photography and hand made slide transparency, collage and textiles. Musical emphasis is experimental, including abstract, chillout, eclectic cinematic beats and electro breaks. All media have a live interactive aspect. Whether it be a split second choice of what to project next, or an improvised response to audience reactions, all performers will be free to interact with their surroundings. This interdependence between performer, audio visual content, other performers, the audience, and the space itself, is what Being in Motion hopes to explore.

How will all these influences affect the performer‚s decision making process? How will all these influences affect the audience’s state of mind? Whilst playing their own role, we encourage a non-separation between audience and performers. What will be the resulting atmosphere in the space? This is an experiment to see how harmoniously these components resonate together.
