Wave is concerned with the metaphor of its medium. It creates an environment for the viewer to in turn project their own thoughts within the arena of the piece. A vast projection of a wave covers one wall of the gallery space. The looped footage and accompanying low rumbling soundtrack present the wave held constantly at the moment before it breaks. The perpetual state of expectation of an inevitable moment of death is as seductive as the wave itself. 24th November 1998 - 28 November 1998 1st December 1998 - 5th December 1998

Born in Britain in 1971, Beth Derbyshire lives and works in London. She has an M.A from Chelsea College of Art and previously studied at Ruskin School of Art, Oxford. Her work has been widely exhibited in the U.K and Europe. Wave was first shown at East International in 1996. In 1996 she was awarded an ACAVA Studio as part of the First Base Competition. She has exhibited her work as part of the 0 to 1 video show at the Brera Institute in Milan in 1996, in Make Room Make Room 1997 at Milch, as part of Mirror at the Museum of Installation in 1997, in ’Ideal Space’ at Backspace, and in Welcome to Paradise at the Central Point Gallery in 1997 and at The privy Off Site in 1998. In 1998 she was the recipient of an EVA Artists Award. Derbyshire is currently exhibiting in the Exhibition of Visual + Art at EVA in Ireland.
