FILMGRUPPE CHAOS - STRANGERS IN THE LIGHT (Super 8mm, 3 minutes)

Filmgruppe Chaos was founded in 1975 as a collective of Super-8 filmmakers. The group has produced short experimental, animation and documentary films The Group always wanted to support the idea of a true underground and independent filmmaking. Spreading information tending out equipment, offering workshops and organising small film screenings and bigger events as well as setting up some film festivals have always been part of their activities. PAVLA ALCHIN - ENTER THE DREAM HOUSE, BROTHERS AND SISTERS (MiniDV, 8 minutes)

Explores an ex-cinema building in London that has been used as a concert venue since 1972 (Brixton Academy). The visual account of the space interacts with the various soundtrack materials used - dialogue, music, ambient sound - some contemporary, recorded on location, and some from a 30s film, specifically Alfred Hitchcock's Sabotage

CLARE EVANS - NEVER MADE IT (MiniDV, 17 minutes)

"I recently had a show at The Notting Hill Arts Club in May-June titled Never Made It. I have spent the past 18 months working as a promoter for bands that have split up with no intention of getting back together. This documentary t features three of the bands from the exhibition, where they share their separate band stories, high points, low points and reflect on their expectations, ambitions and outcomes of the whole experience.

ISAAC JULIEN - TERRITORIES (UK, 1984, 25 minutes, video)

Isaac Julien's first work was a milestone in the development of a black independent film aesthetic. Territories, explained a contemporary press release, refers not only to geographical spaces, but to the occupied and controlled spaces of race, class and sexuality.' Part One considers images of Carnival, Black diaspora culture in Britain and the 1976 Notting Hill Gate riots. Part Two looks in a more poetic manner at personal space, centering on the image of a black gay couple. Territories evokes the creativity of black street culture in the context of the contested space of the inner city.

Isaac Julien was born in 1960 in London, where he currently lives and works. On graduating from St Martin's School of Art in 1984, where he studied painting and fine art film, Isaac Julien founded Sankofa Film and Video Collective, and was a founder member of Normal Films in 1999. He was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2001.
