Subversive - Film Programme

Gallery 291 has invited artist, filmmaker and FLUX programmer, ANNA THEW to show her blue movie CLING FILM in the Main Gallery on Friday Night 19th January, in a selection of her own and other films.

Angered at the vacuous status of art and the death of friends, ANNA THEW made CLING FILM. Rubbery, subversive and text-less; with a cast of ex-lovers, clips from NOSFERATU and Thew posing as ROSE HOBART, it showed around the globe in clubs, cinemas and galleries, becoming the only Arts Council film with a weekly stint at the Brixton FRIDGE... a movie (bel hooks' lecture at MOMI ) "that gets the balance of sex, race and gender just about right". Meanwhile friends in the UK and abroad were making similar interventions, politicizing, exposing, using the tools of their trade to speak out. - Cine Art became the art of transgression. Anything was used from humour to blood to self on screen. This programme represents the extended family that is underground film, which spits at brit art which is not. - (Anna Thew)

ANNA THEW works in S8, 16mm, dv, multi-screen and installation. Her films and programmes are a diverse and ruthless mix of genre and sexuality, breaking the stranglehold of narrative and monetary boundaries which separate gallery art from art that moves.
