Mirror, Mirror

Mirror, mirror...are images in film, video, and television a reflection of ourselves? or, do we also reflect back to those images?...the artists exhibited in "Mirror, Mirror: video art from the U.S. and Canada" cross the boundaries between viewer and viewed, exposing a more ambivalent relationship; one where it is not clear where fiction ends and reality begins.

Contributions from Don Bury, Sheena Macrae, Peggy Ahwesh and Johanna Householder deal specifically with film: either as texture (Macrae's Gone and Ahwesh's The Color of Love) or as social commentary (Bury's Top Gun and Saturday Night Fever and Householder's Next to Last Tango and December 31, 2000). Dafna Ganani and Jen Wu explore the relationship between televisual space and human experience (which is also the case with Householder).

In She Puppet, Ahwesh puts to question our human conception of consciousness as she explores the 'mind' of a well-known computer game character. Animation is also the medium of US artists Jim Duesing and Peter Burr. Duesing's Law of Averages is a critique of cultural mores masked as a surrealistic animation: while Burr's Rock star stands in opposition as a shameless embracing of wide-eyed optimism and self-promotion.

Anita Ponton's performance turns the time-based into real-time and all sense of sequence, narrative and division between fact and fiction is shattered.
