Look a Doll

Part of our on-going Tuesday Film Programme 291 is pleased to present Liliane Lijn's film Look A Doll! My Mother's Story together with a screening of her seminal film What's the Sound of One Hand Clapping?

Acclaimed artist and sculptor Liliane Lijn extends the autobiographical theme she developed in her book Her Mother's Voice, in which she explored through her mother's childhood in Russia and Poland the excruciating reality of family life and the story of a Jewish woman born into the 20th century. The artist unveils this forgotten personal history using hundreds of old family photographs, period archive footage, and interviews with people who lived through that period with her parents or as close friends.

'My parents belonged to a generation of Jews who faced extermination. Through their stories as in a cracked and tarnished mirror, I see myself reflected as if I were formed before my birth by the choices which they made.'

WHAT IS THE SOUND OF ONE HAND CLAPPING?

An example of Liliane Lin's seminal work combining language and time. The film portrays her work with cones from 1964 till 1972. All of these sculptures attempt in one way or another to empty the mind, dematerialise volume, and transform matter into energy.
