Totentanz (Death Dance)

Scenographical photography by Marcus Linder

While hunting in the forest, three young kings found coffins containing rotting corpses. The dead introduced themselves as the fathers of the kings and warned the living: "What you are, we once were. What we are, you will become." (legend)

The theme of Totentanz appeared in Middle Europe in the late Middle Ages. Painted cemetery walls and churches portrayed images of mortals participating in a democratic dance with the skeletal embodiment of death.

Linder’s interpretation uses both the rhythm of film cutting and role-play to bring a contemporary resonance to the theme of death. The photographic installation presents the ideal of life existing alongside the reality of death and the uncertain bridge that links them both. Like film or news footage the installation allows the viewer to be witness to the scene of the crime.
