PeopleSpaces: Queer scenes in London

An exhibition by Heike Löwenstein

PeopleSpaces: Queer scenes in London - An exhibition presenting a perspective that has expanded and moved away from the standard 'gayfaces/gayspaces'. Löwenstein has produced a body of photographic work that genuinely reflects multifaceted London life for a wider audience.

The work represents an interpretation of specific London spaces and raises as many questions about the identity of the people featured in the work as it answers. Each photograph captures the atmosphere of the venue depicted; focusing on people - the staff and the public, or the spaces - interiors, entrances and architectural details.

This body of work was shot between June 1998 and February 1999. The exhibition at 291 Gallery comprises of a selection from the commissioned photographs featured in ‘dyke london’ and ‘gay london’’ published by ellipsis - July/August 1999; and as such provides a seriously contemporary take on its subject(s).
