James Hopkins current work explores issues that encompass physical and mental instabilities by using a juxtaposition of opposites to form an equilibrium.

A portrait of Einstein is transcribed onto a strait jacket using his mathematical equations, a sampling is delicately carved from within the handle of an axe, a four pack of lager has its red stripe logo replaced with the word ‘philosophy’ and a baseball bat’s manufacturer’s name is altered to the word ‘psychology’, referring to the psychoanalysis of violent behaviour. Text is also formulated to produce psychological states of mind through the use of simple visual trickery. Black and white letters are arranged to read forwards and backwards (reflection) producing both positive and negative words when viewed from a certain angle.
