THAT NAUGHTY COAT!

Cabaret / 2004

Story of A Naughty Coat

That Naughty Coat! A receptionist had files on all the performers. She was quite irate, her job involved a high level of organisation and she did not have the right kind of mind for filing. She prefered creative expression, which was evident in her elaberate hair style and striped blazer. Briony the receptionist could answer any enquiries posed by visiters and organise meetings between performers and punters. She reffered them on to check their coat. All coats checked were later paraded in a coat check fashion show, on show girls wearing striped stockings and feathers in their hair. Such accessories can spice up a mid grey calf length trench or a satin bomber. The parade was commenting on the mutability and changeability of the fashion industry. By transporting designs direct from punter to parade, costs attributed to brainstorming sessions and inspiration boards are cut. Designs by Barbara and Justine became wearable art and everyone felt creativly inspired. ‘Fashion’ by David Bowie (12”) was the natural musical accompaniment.

Burlesque is currently receiving a little bit of attention. Although existing as a scene for many hundreds of years, it was not untill the 1920’s when an element of nudity was introduced. A contemplation of the It contains whatever makes ‘The Secretary’ an amazing piece of cinema to the men and ‘a quirky soft porn’ flick to the girls. Burlesque has something for everyone. Even the hippodrome is doing it, with their very own borrowed blend of west end dancers in corsets and cheesy house. The boys can watch the pretty girls take off their clothes, the girls can wear all that sexy underwear and vintage clothing they have been spending so much of their lives accumulating and every one can feel vaugly artistic. Well, it makes good copy and promoters can make a bit o’ cash for a bit, so why not!

Delilah did an excellent interpretive dance to ‘short skirt, long jacket’ my 1998 was a good year for ironic post grunge!

Honeybone Wot, accordians and saxophones when played in a neo-gothic church halls, gather some of the accoustic resonance of a busker in a tube coridor. They also make excellent accompaniments to grotesque stipteases where an unveiling or revealing exposes big springy breasts
