The 291 Bar was a vibrant social and cultural hub, occupying the dramatic vaulted spaces of the former church and providing a unique setting where art, culture and community could meet. More than simply a bar, it functioned as an informal extension of the gallery programme, hosting film screenings, live music, DJs, visual projections, spoken word events and the popular 291 Cabaret Arts Club.
The relaxed and inclusive atmosphere at the 291 Bar encouraged artists, performers, curators and visitors to gather, exchange ideas and continue conversations long after exhibitions and performances had ended. The bar offered an affordable menu of food and drinks, including Sunday brunch, and featured a large outdoor beer garden adjacent to Haggerston Park and opposite the City Farm, adding to its distinctive character. As a key element of the 291 Gallery’s self-sustaining model, the 291 Bar generated essential income while simultaneously helping to establish the gallery as one of East London’s most vibrant and socially engaged cultural destinations.
